Dávid Tarnai was born in May 1982 in Budapest (Hungary). He began his musical education in 1989 at Leöwey Klára (Andor Ilona) Primary School (Voice / Music Programme). From 1997 to 2001 he studied at Bláthy Ottó Titusz Technical High School, Budapest. During his studies he had private lessons with Melinda Lugosi from 1999 to 2005 at Aelia Sabina Musical School (Budapest) and from 2005 to 2007 with Mária Fekete at Béla Bartók Conservatory (solo voice department) in Budapest. He got his degree (opera voice performance, MA) at University of Szeged Department of Music as a pupil of Tamás Szüle (2007-2010). In 2008 he got a scholarship of the Republic of Hungary for the 2008/2009 academic year at the University of Pécs' Faculty of Arts.

He was admitted to University of Szeged Department of Music in 2010 in the class of István Andrejcsik. He graduated in 2012 (Opera voice performance, MA). In 2011 he got a scholarship of the Republic of Hungary for the 2011/2012 academic year at the University of Szeged's Department of Music too.

He took part a lot of masters classes too: Éva Marton (Szeged, 2009, 2010, 2011), Mária Temesi (Szeged, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), Adrienne Csengery (Pécs, 2009), György Orbán (Pécs, 2009), Yevgeny Nesterenko (Budapest, 2009, 2010, 2012), Boldizsár Keönch (Balassagyarmat, 2011), Leontina Vaduva (Cluj-Napoca, 2012), Anda Tabacaru Hogea (Cluj-Napoca, 2012), Petre Sbarcea (Cluj-Napoca, 2012), Éva Bátori (Budapest, 2013), Dénes Gulyás (Budapest, Baja, 2015), Miklós Király (Baja, 2015).

During and after his studies he won several competitions e.g.: Third National Inter-Conservatory Singing Competitions, Saint Stephen Music House, Budapest – Second place in Category Two (2005), University of Pécs Department of Music Award of Excellence competition, Pécs – Award of Outstanding Excellence for Mussorgsky's song Seminarian (2010), University of Szeged Faculty of Music Student Research Conference – performing artists' section – Shared first place with Katalin Töreky for course work on the symbolism in Bluebeard's Castle, Szeged (2011), Fourth Szeged Contemporary Music Competition, University of Szeged Department of Music – Award of Excellence for György Kurtág's Three Songs to Poems by János Pilinszky (2012), 31st National Student Research Conference XXXI, Eszterházy Károly College, Eger – Artistic section, musical performance – voice category – Shared third place also with Katalin Töreky for course work on the symbolism in Bluebeard's Castle (2013), XIX. Iuventus Canti International Song Competition - special award (2017), finalist of Armel Competition (2017), Szecsődi-Réti Song Competition - second place (2018).

From 2013 he has been a member of the Hungarian State Opera's Chorus and from 2014 he has been a member of the Hungarian Bel Canto Society.

He often sings operas, oratorios, cantatas and masses.
