Gergely Popa was born on the 7th of October, 1974. He graduated from the Béla Bartók High School of Music before earning his degree in violin and violin pedagogy at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music (2001).
He joined the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2000 and also served as a guest artist with the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa from 2000 until 2004. Employed with the Mathias Institut between 2004 and 2008, he gained experience in developing and operating performance evaluation systems, but he also never abandoned the music world. From 2007 until 2013, he served as the section leader and concertmaster of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra. He also returned to the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2009 as section leader, with a one-year stint there as orchestra manager starting in 2014. He remained there until 2018. From 2018 to 2023, he served as music director of the Hungarian State Opera. Effective June 1, 2025, following a decision by the City Council of Szombathely, he became director of the Savaria Symphony Orchestra.
In July 2026 Ervin Nagy, State Secretary for Culture, appointed him to serve as Deputy State Secretary for Music.
