He learnt to play the piano and graduated from the faculty of percussion at the Béla Bartók Conservatory. Between 1960 and 1969 he was a percussionist (timpanist) of the Hungarian State Orchestra. He was accepted to the conducting major of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1968, where he obtained his diploma in 1971 as a student of András Kórodi.
As an undergraduate, he has already conducted Mozart's Cosi fan tutte and Puccini's Madam Butterfly at the Budapest State Opera. Then he participated at a course with Maestro Franco Ferrara in Italy. In 1974 he was the 2nd prize winner of the 1st International Conducting Competition of the Hungarian Television.
He became the member of the Hungarian State Opera House in 1969, first being a repetiteur and conductor, then, between 1990 and 1993, the Music Director of the theater. A significant part of his artistic activities is done at the Budapest State Opera (he conducts some 30 operas), but he frequently conducts also concerts and radio recordings.
He has been teaching at the Academy of Music as an associate professor on singing-opera major since 1981. From 1987 to 1996 he was the music director of the Matáv Symphony Orchestra (the former Symphony Orchestra of the Hungarian Post). In 1997 he became the primary conductor of the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared in nearly all European countries and has conducted orchestras in the United States as well.
