Margit Angerer was born as Margit Rupp in Budapest. She studied voice at the Budapest Academy of Music and also made her début in the Hungarian capital. In 1926 she received a contract from the Vienna Staatsoper, and scored successes there up to 1938. She also performed her memorable Richard Strauss roles of Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier and Aithra in Die aegyptische Helena at the Salzburg Festival. In Vienna she was a favourite partner of Alfred Piccaver's, the Staatsoper's leading tenor then, and they made several recording together. In 1938 she moved to London, where she was active as a concert singer.
