Eggerth Martha was born in Budapest, evincing talent even as a child. She was only eleven when she sang the part of Olympia at a performance of Le Contes d'Hoffmann. As a child prodigy she gave concerts all over Europe. She became an operetta prima donna in Vienna, Hamburg and Berlin. From 1927 she regularly played in films as well and became on of the first talkie stars. In 1936 she married to the worldfamous Polish tenor Jan Kiepura, and the couple emigrated in 1938 to the United States where they scored tremendous success. Their joint performance of The Merry Widow has a run of more than three years in a New York Broadway theatre. In America she also appeared in opera roles. Her reviewers praised he excellent coloratura skills, her acting gifts and not least her extreme beauty, which was cut out for the stage.
