He began his musical studies in Sátoraljaújhely, specializing in violin and clarinet, and continued his studies at the Béla Bartók Music High School in Miskolc in 1982. In 1986 he received first prize and the Art Foundation special prize in the Hans Richter National Woodwind Competition, and consequently was admitted directly to the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where his teachers were Béla Kovács and József Balogh. Mr. Szatmári was the only Hungarian delegate to the Zürich National Youth Music Competition in September 1988, and the next month he was awarded the special prize of the Artisjus (copyright office) at the Hungarian Radio’s National Woodwind Competition for his performance of Kamilló Lendvay’s composition “Respectfully yours, Mr. Goodman”.
In 1990 he received first prize in the International Clarinet Alliance. He has been invited several times to perform in the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and in October, 1990 participated in presenting the works of twentieth century Hungarian and Italian Composers in Rome.
The clarinetist gave recitals in the Budapest Spring Festival and at festivals in Sofia and Bratislava in the spring of 1990. His performances have been broadcast several times on the Hungarian Radio. He received his diploma summa cum laude at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music. He is now a scholarship clarinetist of the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra and principal clarinetist of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
