Richárd Kornai studied to become a painter, but embarked on acting career in Nagyszeben, Transylvania. He played in several theatres in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and later sang too. He joined to the Opera House in Budapest in 1895. His roles included Baron Ochs in Rosenkavalier, Falstaff in Die Iustigen Wieber von Windsor, Mozart's Figaro and Mephistopheles. In 1913 he had to abandon his singing career due to his already developed loss of hearing, but continued to work at the Opera House as a stage designer.
