György Anthes was born in Bad Homburg, Germany into a family of musicians. He studied at Frankfurt and Milan, and began as a podium singer before making his stage début in 1888 as Max in Der Freischütz at Freiburg im Breisgau. By the following year he was already the principal Helden-tenor at the Dresden Opera House. He sang at Bayreuth in 1892 and was a member of the New York Met for the 1902-1903 season. From 1903 he spent ten years as a soloist with the Hungarian Opera after which he still remained in the Hungarian capital. From 1913 on he taught singing at the Academy of Music, and from 1920 was the chief producer at the Oprea House. Anthes was one of the most eminent Wagner-tenors of the time, most of all praised by critics for his excellent rendition of Lohengrin. He was also an excellent Walther von Stolzing and Tristan. (The first he sang in Bayreuth and the second at the Met.) He enjoyed great popularity in Hungary, which he made his second home. The noble brilliance of his voice, his eloquence and refined acting invariably captivated audiences. He did much to ensure worthy productions of Wagner's operas at Budapest. As a teacher, he trained a succession of excellent Hungarian singers.
