József Gábor was born in Balassagyarmat and originally intended to become an actor. Having completed his studies at the Budapest Drama Academy he first joined a non-music-theatre and then the People's Theatre both in Budapest. He scored his first musical successes as a concert singer in Berlin and Milan, and was engaged by the Vienna Volksoper then. He was active with Budapest company from 1900 until his death. He was a highly versatile singer, whose Wagner roles extended Loge, Parsifal, Tannhäuser and even David in Die Meistersinger. His excellent renditions included Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus and other fine operetta roles. He also taught singing.
