Süle László

Place of Birth
Budapest
Date of Birth
1955

He started playing the piano at age 7, and later learned composition, harmonization, counterpoint and instrumentation. Between 1981–1984 he attended the Béla Bartók Conservatory, then after graduating he became an instructor of the institution. In 1988 he toured in Finland with his trio and was invited to teach at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory. He moved to Finland and started to teach in 1989. From 1989 to 1995 he performed with his first Finnish group the László Süle Band. The band played mostly Süle’s compositions; released three CD’s and gave many concerts in Finland and abroad. Apart from writing jazz pieces he also composes contemporary music for formations of various sizes.
The collaboration between László Süle and Pentti Lahti (1945) started in 1995, when Süle founded the Ad Lib Quintet. Following that period they played and recorded together in a number of other setups, in duo, and with the Scarbantia String Quartet. The multi-instrumentalist Lahti, who is one of the most popular Finnish jazz musicians, emerged on the jazz scene of his home country in the early 1970s, however his attention had turned towards jazz music a decade or so earlier. He was among the founding fathers of UMO, then worked with the Mircea Stan Quartet, the Eero Koivistoinen Octet, and the Braxtonia Ensemble. In 1994 he released his first solo album. Presently he is working with László Süle, the Saxperiment saxophone quartet, and Eero Hämeenniemi’s Nada.
