Violinist György Liener was born in Prague and graduated from the Franz Liszt Music Academy. He won a special prize at the London Karl Flesch international competition. He began his career at the Hungarian State Concert Orchestra and then joined the Opera House orchestra. He has been living in Germany since 1981, where he filled concertmaster posts at several orchestras. In 1988 he committed himself to the Munich Radio Orchestra. In parallel to this, he worked as a first violinist with the Residenzorchester, the Munich Bach Orchester and the Bach Collegium, with whom he also frequently performed as a soloist. As a chamber musician, Gyórgy Liener has worked with the soloists of the Berlin Philharmonic as well as the New European String ensemble. In 1990, he formed a string quartet that bears his name with musicians from the Munich Radio Orchestra. The Liener Quartet has made numerous CD recordings. They have performed on a number of occasions in Japan, America and all over Europe. His partners have included Cyprien Katsaris, Dmitri Sitkovetsky, Ernő Sebestyén and many other distinguished names. He has worked with conductors such as Sergiu Celibidache, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Giuseppe Patané, Leonard Slatkin, Marcello Viotti, Pinchas Steinberg and Yuri Simonov.
