Born in 1981 in Budapest into a musical family, Szabolcs Zempléni learned first to play the piano, later the trompet. It was only in 1994 that he switched to the horn, which since 1999 he has been learning at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, with Ferenc Tarjáni. In 1995 he won first prize at the National Horn Competition, in 1997 at the International Horn Competition of Békés, in 1998 at the "Concertino Prague" International Horn Competition and in 2001 at the International Horn Competition of Brno. In 2005 he received first prize at the competition of ARD (German Television) - in the long history of the prestigious competition this was the fifth occasion that a first price was awarded. He has performed as soloist in the Czech Republic, in Malta, Austria and Germany. He was invited as guest artist to the world meetings of the International Horn Society (IHS) in China (2000) and in the USA (2001). Since September 2000 he has been playing first horn in the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
