Zsolt Tibay was a student of Lajos Montág at the Bartók Béla Secondary Music School. He graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1972 where his father, Zoltán Tibay, was his professor. He was admitted to the Orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera in 1970. Tibay was appointed first double bass of the orchestra in 1976, and he also became a member of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. In the same year, he started teaching double bass as his main teaching post, and also orchestral repertoire-studies at the Music Academy. He joined the Budapest Wind Ensemble in 1983 and also from that time played at concerts as well as recordings of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Since 1988 he has regularly played with the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra. Additionally, he has been guest professor at the Musashino Academia Musicć in Tokyo in the double bass and chamber music department. His bilingual work entitled Multipurpose Scale Exercises for Double bass has been issued by the Eötvös József Publishing House.
