She began her piano studies at the age of six and her singing studies in 1983. In 1985 she became a member of the Hungarian State Opera at Kolozsvár, and one year later she entered the O. Dima Academy of Music. Her first opera role was as Amelia in Verdis Un ballo in maschera in 1987, and after that she appeared as Erzsébet Szilágyi in Ferenc Erkels Hunyadi László, as Leonora in Il trovatore, as Violetta in La traviata and as the Countess in Le nozze di Figaro. In February 1990 Ms. Farkas settled in Hungary, and in April she received a contract from the Hungarian State Opera, where she added the following roles to her repertory: the title role in Donizettis Anna Bolena, Melinda in Ferenc Erkels Bánk Bán and Anais in Rossinis Mosè in Egitto. In July 1990, along with Mihály Kálmándi she received a Duet Prize at the International Opera and Bel Canto Competition in Antwerp; in September she won first prize and the special prize of the Pentaton Foundation in the song category of the Budapest International Erkel-Kodály Singing Competition. In November she received the Wagner prize at the Barcelona Francesco Viñas Singing Competition.
