Gabor Dörnyei was born in Szeged in 1977. He started teaching himself to play the drums at the age of twelve, then became a student of the Szeged music school. Initially he played rock music, and was member of numerous local rock bands. In 1995, at the age of 18 he recorded his first album with a local formation called "Steampower". In the same year he participated in the International Drummer Festival in the Budapest Convention Center featuring Steve Smith. He has been a regular performer of the Festival ever since. Throughout the years he had the chance to play with Tommy Campbell, Jojo Mayer, Richard Bailey and Steve Alexander to name just a few. The different bands he played in, made Gábor a musician adept in various musical styles. He also played in theatres all over the country and participated in recordings of the musicals Les Misérables, Fame, Rent etc. As of 2002 he became an official endorser of the Canadian cymbal company, Sabian, thanks to Jackie Houlden. He has been a member of the following groups: Tóth-Bagi Band, Nevergreen, Alba Funk Trio, Birta Quartet, László Attila Band, In Line, Tamás Hevesi, Károly Binder Project, Crystal, Unisex etc.
In 2001 he prepared an instructional multimedia CD, which has served as a study-aid at several of his drum clinics. In 2003 he performed in Budapest with Dom Famularo, representative of Sabian, and world famous drum instructor. In the same year he appeared at the International Drum Festival in Karlsruhe, and formed his own band, the Gábor Dörnyei Trio.
