Sándor Gyüdi was born in Szekszárd in 1959 and attended school in Pécs. He played the cello and later, studied singing, but after matriculating decided not to follow a musical career: in 1983 he graduated from Szeged University with a degree in Maths and Physics. While a student, he founded the Canticum Chamber Chorus, which led to making his reputation nationwide, winning international competitions with the ensemble. Following university he continued his studies at the Budapest Music Academy. In 1988 when he graduated, he joined the Szeged National Theatre where he worked as the choir and orchestra conductor until 2000. In 1992, he was appointed guest choir conductor at the Teatro Regio in Turin. He made his debut as an opera conductor in the 1989/90 season, and his repertoire embraces the core of the repertoire (Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini etc.) Besides his native Hungary, he has worked in France, Spain, Holland and Great Britain. In parallel to his stage work, since 1990 he has conducted many successful orchestral concerts. Since 1988 he has been a leading choirmaster with the Viktor Vaszy Choir. He initially became famous for his oratorio performances but in the 1990s, increasingly established himself as an orchestral conductor. He has worked in 18 countries besides Hungary. Since May 1999, he has been the managing conductor of the Szeged Symphony Orchestra.
