Gábor Bretz began his vocal studies at the Béla Bartók Music College. In 1999, he was admitted to the Music Academy where he studied with Erika Szikla and Sándor Sólyom-Nagy. In 2002, he began attending the opera faculty where his teacher was Balázs Kovalik. He graduated in 2004. In this same year, Gábor Bretz performed a number of rarely heard bass roles (Rameau: Triumph of Artemis, Halévy: The Jewish Woman). He has been placed in a number of Hungarian and international competitions, including second places in Baden (2001), Szeged (2002) and Miskolc (2003); and he has been the winner of the 2005 International Maria Callas Competition. He is a member of the Hungarian State Opera. In 2020 he was given the title Merited Artist, in 2022 he was awarded with Mihály Székely Prize. In 2023 he was given the Bartók-Pásztory Prize. A year later in 2024 he was awarded with Kossuth Prize.
