He studied conducting at the Franz Liszt Music College from 1987; in 1988 he entered the singing faculty as well. In 1992, he graduated with top marks as a conductor where his teachers were Ervin Lukács, András Ligeti and Tamás Gál. In 1989, he won the audience prize at Hungarian Television´s 6th International Conductor´s Competition. Since then, he has given concerts with virtually all Hungary´s top orchestras. In 1991-92, he was a musical assistant at the Opera House and 1992-94, a rehearsal conductor at the State Concert Orchestra; he was also Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi´s assistant. He has conducted the Dohnányi Symphony Orchestra in a number of Austrian and Italian concerts. In 1993, he reached the final of the Toscanini competition in Parma and in 1994, won first prize at the Treviso International Conductor´s Competition. As a consequence, he gave concerts across Italy for two months in the autumn in 1993. Since 1994, Imre Kollár has been the principal conductor and music director of the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra. He was awarded the Rubányi Prize in recognition of his artistic activities.
