Lajos Lencsés was born in Dorog in the 18th of January 1943. He studied music at the Béla Bartók Conservatory and the Budapest Academy of Music (1961-1966). He has also been the recipient of several scholarships for master courses in France, thanks to the French Institute in Budapest: he was a student of Étienne Baudo at Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris in 1967. In Nice, he was a participant in Pierre Pierlot's summer academy.
In 1968, he won one of the most prestigious international music competitions in Geneva, and his international career took flight.
In 1971 he was appointed principal oboist with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he played for almost four decades until the age of 65.
As a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed in major European cities such as Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Madrid, Brussels, Athens and Lisbon, as well as in concert halls in the US and Japan. He has collaborated with renowned artists such as Sergiu Celibidache, Karl Münchinger, Sir Neville Marriner, Christoph Eschenbach and Jean-Pierre Rampal.
His vast repertoire, ranging from baroque to contemporary music, is preserved in more than fifty acclaimed recordings. Although his professional activities are closely tied to Germany, France and Switzerland, he regularly returns to Hungary to give concerts and master classes. He has been a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2023.
In 2003 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Republic of Hungary and a year later the Officer’s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit.
