Mercédesz Győri was born in Budapest in 1971. She began her music studies at the age of six, first in piano, and then began studying the flute when she was ten. In 1985 she was admitted to the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music. She received the first prize in the János Richter National Woodwind Competition in 1989, and consequently was admitted to the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music without having to take the entrance examinations. There she studied with Lóránt Kovács. In 1991 she studied for a year with Jean-Claude Gerard in Stuttgart. Since that time Ms. Győri has participated in numerous masterclasses offered by Karl-Heinz Zoeller, Michael Faust and Alain Marion, and has taken part in many international flute competitions, such as those in Prague (1991) and Genf (1992), and won the second prize in the Szeged International Solo Flute Competition in 1992.
