Born in 1946 in Budapest, Péter Lukács pursued his musical studies first at the Béla Bartók Musical Secondary School with Margit Lányi, later at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where his professor was his father, Pál Lukács. He obtained his diploma in 1970. In 1969 he became member of the Orchestra of the Hungarian State Opera House, where since 1976 he has been solo viola player. For ten years he also played in the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra and was member of the Budapest Chamber Orchestra, as well as of the Budapest Haydn Baryton Trio. In addition to pursuing an important teaching activity at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music (viola methodology and orchestral repertoire), he made numerous radio, television and CD recordings. In 1979 he was awarded with the Vilmos Komor Memorial Prize. Since 1989 he has been leader of the viola section of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
