Péter Kubina is a double bass player, principal double bassist with the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and teacher of double bass and orchestral part playing at the String Department.
He was born in 1963. He graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in 1986, where he studied double bass under Aladár Pege and Zoltán Tibay. Between 1977 and 1992, he was a private student of Lajos Montag. In 2009, he obtained a DLA degree. The title of his dissertation is: Lajos Montag, an outstanding figure in double bass playing.
He has been an assistant professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music since 1987, an associate professor since 1998, and a docent since 2010. In addition to Hungary, he has also held master classes in Serbia and Japan (at the invitation of the Toho Gakuen Orchestra Academy). Since 2002, he has been the founder and artistic director of the annual Tata Double Bass Camp.
Since 1984, he has been the principal double bassist of the State Concert Orchestra and then the National Philharmonic Orchestra. As a member of the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, he has participated in several recordings and tours with the ensemble. He is the principal double bassist of the Bruno Walter Symphony Orchestra. He has also made his debut as assistant section leader of the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin. In addition, he regularly performs as a soloist.
As a chamber musician, he enjoys playing everything from Baroque to contemporary music. He has performed as a guest artist with numerous ensembles (Nicolaus Esterházy Sinfonia, Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Ferenc Erkel Chamber Orchestra, Weiner-Szász Chamber Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Strings, György Solti Chamber Orchestra, European Soloists Chamber Ensemble Luxembourg). He is a member of the UMZE chamber ensemble and has participated in the premiere of numerous contemporary works (e.g., György Kurtág: Anna Ahmatova: Four Poems, Op. 41, January 31, 2009, New York, Carnegie Hall-Zankel Hall).
In 1987, he received the Bartók-Pásztory Award as a member of the State Concert Orchestra. In 2025, he was awarded the Hungarian Gold Cross of Merit (civilian division).
