Soma Szabó was born in 1974 in Nyíregyháza. He is a founding member and artistic director of the Banchieri Singing Ensemble. As artistic director of the Cantemus Choir of Nyíregyháza, he is the artistic director of three ensembles of the choir institution.
He started his musical studies in the children's and boys' choir of the Kodály Zoltán Primary School in Nyíregyháza, and continued his studies in violin in Debrecen. He graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest in 1998 with a degree in choir conducting. He studied privately in Debrecen and Budapest.
Currently, he is a music history teacher at the Nyíregyháza Secondary School of Art and at the University of Nyíregyháza, and the principal conductor of the Szabolcs Symphony Orchestra. He is frequently invited to serve on the jury of international choral competitions. Every year he conducts conducting or chamber choir master classes and Kodály workshops throughout Europe, as well as in the USA, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Over the past 30 years, he has won several first prizes and grand prizes with his choirs at international choir competitions (Tolosa, Gorizia, Cantonigros, Budapest, Debrecen). In 2016 he was awarded the Best Conductor Prize, in 2017 he was awarded the Ferenc Liszt Prize, in 2022 he received the Artisjus Teacher Prize, and he has also received the Prima Prize and the Béla Katona Prize for his professional achievements.
