István Veér has been principal clarinet with the orchestra for more than 40 years. Born in the 15th of March 1946 in Győr, he began his clarinet playing in his native town. His teachers were József Apró and György Balassa, and he graduated from the Budapest Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in 1972. Since then he has been a member of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra. He is also the clarinetist in the Hungarian Radio Wind Quintet, and in 1979 he won first prize at the Wind Quintet Competition in Colmar (France).
He was awarded with Bartók-Pásztory Award and Liszt Award (2004).
He plays Buffet RC Prestige full-Boehm system clarinets, a crystal mouthpiece, Vandoren reeds and a Luyben ligature.
He died in the 12th of February 2022 in Hungary.
