Tamás Szabó was born in Dunaújváros in 1946. After early study of the violin from the age of seven and several prizes won at local, regional and national competitions, he entered at the age of 13 the Béla Bartók Music School in Budapest, and later the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. There his teachers included Béla Katona and Mihály Szűts. He obtained his diploma in 1969. He was from 1967 onwards for 25 years member of the Hungarian National Orchestra, first as rank and file member of the first violin section, later as leader of the second violins. Since 1969 he has been member of the Kodály String Quartet and was awarded with the Liszt and Bartók-Pásztory prizes. Together with his string quartet he visited as many as 52 countries. Since 1992 he has been leader of the second violin section of the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
