Weiner Ensemble
Orchestra, choir, ensemble
The Weiner Ensemble was established from final year and doctorate students of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in September, 2014 under the supervision of professor Márta Gulyás. Its founding members are Réka Baksai (violin), Máté Bán (flute), Imre Dani (piano), Janka Jámbor Balogh (cello), and Csaba Pálfi (clarinet), who were joined in 2023 by Annamária Sziroczák-Bán (flute).
The group's main goal is to broaden the repertoire of this special instrumentation, the so-called pierrot ensemble formation (a composition for speak-singing - Sprechgesang, and five instrumentalists), as well as introducing it to a broader audience. The repertoire of the ensemble contains music from solo pieces of the baroque era to 20th century, contemporary ensemble compositions and pieces of young Hungarian composers.
In honour of the chamber music work and traditions of the Hungarian composer Leo Weiner, and with the approval and support of the Weiner Leo Foundation, the chamber group changed its name to Weiner Ensemble in September 2015.
In 2016, the Weiner Ensemble won 3. prize at the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, and was invited to perform at the Orlando Festival. They also had the opportunity to participate in the masterclasses of Henk Guittart, James Austin Smith, Alan R. Kay and the Lafayette Quartet.
In 2023, the ensemble created its own contemporary music education programme, the COnteMPASS Workshop, which aims to introudce students in secondary music education to the history and language of contemporary music through the works of contemporary Hungarian composers. The programme has reached over 700 students in eleven institutions.
In 2024, they received the Artisjus Performing Arts Award.
