The Cantemus Mixed Choir, which has been formed from students within the Primary School of Kodály Zoltán Nyíregyháza, has already appeared occasionally at some of the big events of the school under the direction of Dénes Szabó since 1992. To mention some of these: the choir performed on the 100th anniversary of the school (singing the famous ‘Spem in alium’ by Tallis for 40 parts), also on the choir’s 20th Jubilee Concert and they even sang to the Pope, Paul John II in Castelgandolfo.

The choir started their regular work with Soma Szabó in August 1998. On numerous occasions, besides performing oratorical pieces of the city of Nyíregyháza, the choir has also managed to build up their own repertoire. In 2001 at the International Choral Competition in Budapest they won the first prize in the category of mixed choirs as well as the Grand Prize. The Cantemus Mixed Choir has been awarded with the highest degree (Concert Choir Summa Cum Laude) by the ‘KOTA’ in 2003. In 2004 the choir won 2nd Prize at the Béla Bartók International Competition.

In 2006 the Mixed Choir participated at the International Choral Competition in Gorizia (Italy), where they have won four 1st Pizes, two 2nd Prizes and three Special Prizes. Furthermore the mixed choir won the Grand Prix of the competition as well, gaining the right to participate at the European Grand Prix Competition in Arezzo (Italy) 2007.

In 2008 the choir won numerous prizes and Grand Prix at the competition in Tolosa (Spain) gaining the right to participate at the European Grand Prix Competition in Tours (France) in 2009.
