The Budapest Festival Horn Quartet was founded by four young artists, Miklós Nagy, László Rákos, László Gál and Tibor Maruzsa in 1993. The horn section of the Budapest Festival Orchestra - established by the world-famous pianist and conductor Zoltán Kocsis and the conductor Iván Fischer - in addition to the high level of orchestral activity has sought opportunities to demonstrate their talent in chamber music.
Their first significant appearance was the diploma-concert of László Rákos included R. Schumann's Concerto for 4 Horns and Orchestra in 1993, widely appreciated as one of the most difficult pieces written for horn quartet, which they performed with the B.F.O.
In 1995 the Quartet was invited to the 4th International Brass Competition of Passau (Germany) and was awarded the 2nd prize among the best of those in the field and received invitations for further concerts.
Their repertoire fully embraces the pieces composed for horn quartet and includes numerous arrangements of compositions ranging from Baroque to contemporary music.
Their two CD's "Cornologia" and "Cornologia 2000" was released in 1996 and 2000 by Hungaroton Classic and was favourably reviewed in Europe and overseas.
Apart from Hungarian concert halls they successfully performed in concerts, festivals, masterclasses in Japan and Europe.
From September 2000 the Quartet is not any more member of the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Miklós Nagy is solo horn of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, László Rákos is solo horn of the Hungarian National Philharmonic, László Gál and Tibor Maruzsa are also members of the Hungarian National Philharmonic.
