Sommerreise is the reverse of Schubert’s landmark song-cycle Winterreise. In Winterreise, a man laments in 24 songs that his lover has broken up with him. In Sommerreise, the protagonist is a woman; the story is set not in winter but in summer; her lover does not break up with her but disappears; she does not leave but arrives— and after that, all sorts of things happen to her, primarily that she starts her life over.
