Iván Patachich studied composition with Albert Siklós, János Viski and Ferenc Szabó at the Budapest Academy of Music. For a while, he worked as a conductor in various theatres. In 1952, he was appointed to be musical director of the Budapest Film Studio.
In 1971, he organised the electronic music studio EXASTUD (Experimentum Auditorii Studii) in Budapest. In 1976-77, he experimented with electro-acoustic and computer music in Stuttgart and Utrecht. He realised works at Columbia University, N.Y.(1969), Stockholm (1974), Bratislava (1975), Stuttgart (1976), Utrecht (1977), Bourges (1980), Belgrade (1985), Athens (1987), Paris (CEMAMU), (1988).
In 1957, Ivan Patachich was a prize winner at the World Youth Festival. In 1978, his Metamorphosi for marimba and tape was awarded the elecrto-acoustic prize in Bourges. In 1984, Ludi spaziali won the Grand Prix of C.I.M.E., France.
