Attila Gallai, composer, clarinetist and teacher, was born on 30 March 1943 in Győr. He studied violin, cello and clarinet with Ferenc Baritz. In 1957 he joined the orchestra of the ETI and became a military musician. In the same year he was admitted to the Secondary School of Music. He became the first student of the Music Officer Training School. He was discharged from the army in the summer of 1967.
In September 1963, one of his first works, the Christmas Symphony, was premiered at a mass. In September 1968, he was accepted into the Debrecen Philharmonic Orchestra, from which he left to study at the Academy of Music. He graduated in 1937 with distinction in clarinet. He was a member of the Budapest MÁV Symphony Orchestra from 1 April 1970 until his professional retirement in 1994. He also worked as a teacher. He taught at the music school in Budapest's 6th District, at the Szilágyi Erzsébet Foster Home and at the Bartók Béla Faculty of Arts of the University of Szeged. At the Monor Music School he was head of department and later director.
He studied composition with Melinda Kistétényi and Gyula Kiszely. In 1991, he founded the Society of Creative Musicians, of which he was repeatedly re-elected president.
He died on the 13th of December, 2022.
