Composer Mihály Víg was born on September 21, 1957 in Budapest into a family of musicians. His father, Rudolf Víg, was a folk music researcher and conductor, so it is not surprising that he himself continued this tradition and, in addition to composing, he is also active as a guitarist, singer and songwriter. He is a founding member of several bands: Trabant (1982) and Balaton (1979). He has also composed music for the works of János Xantus, András Szirtes, Ildikó Szabó, Péter Müller Sziámi and Béla Tarr.
He was nominated for a European Film Award for the music for the film The Horse of Turin. He played the lead role in Béla Tarr's 1994 film Sátántangó, and also appeared in Gábor Fabricius's film Eltörölni Frankot. In 2022 director András Kécza made a film about his life entitled Ott torony volt. He has released several CDs, and in 1996 Bahia Music Publishing released his book, entitled Versek és novellák.
In 2003 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, Civil Division. In 2008 he was awarded the Film Composer of the Year prize at the EU XXL Film Festival in Vienna.
