The composer was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1926, and studied there from an early age at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, earning degrees in piano performance, composition, conducting, percussion, and chamber music. His teachers included Zoltan Kodály, Béla Ambróczy, János Ferencsik, János Viski, and Leó Weiner. He won numerous awards in international piano competition, and was a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium competition in 1956.

During the Hungarian uprising against Soviet control in 1956 he left Hungary and settled in the United States. At the invitation of Fritz Reiner, he joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the late 1950s for several seasons, and thereafter taught primarily at the Music Center of the North Shore (now the Music Institute of Chicago), in Winnetka, Illinois. He died in the United States in 1985.
