9 April 1916, Szombathely - 25 July 1944, Lukov [Slovakia]

László Weiner, one of the most promising talents of 20th-century Hungarian music, started studying music in his native town Szombathely. While still at the gramar school, he saw Kodály’s opera Háry János at the Budapest Opera House. He felt this experience brought about a decisive turn in his professional development. He started studying composition under Kodály in 1934 and made good progress in all subjects. Although he could have graduated in four years’ time, he decided to repeat the fourth academic year twice, remaining a student of the Academy until 1940.

His talent showed in all fields: as a conductor, composer and pianist. The premiere of his first orchestral work (Overture for Small Orchestra) was conducted by Lajos Rajter. However, history left him little time to unfold his aristic talent. László Weiner died at the labour camp of Lukov, at the age of no more than twenty-eight.

Each of his works showes his talent, e. g.: Duo for Violin and Viola (1939), String Trio – Serenade (1938), Sonata for Viola and Piano and Concerto for Piano, Flute, Viola and String Orchestra.
