He studied composition with Zoltán Kodály as well as piano with István Thomán and Arnold Székely at the Budapest Academy of Music (1929-33).

He taught at several private music schools, subsequently at the Budapest Municipal Music School Organization, the Béla Bartók Conservatory, and since 1961 he has been professor of the Academy of Music in Budapest. In 1957 he was awarded the Erkel Prize.

His cycle of songs won the first prize at the competition organized on the occasion of the 25th aniversary of Budapest's liberation, in 1970. His "Capriccio all'ongarese" was awarded the Hungarian Radio's Prize of the Public.
