Péter Kelen completed his studies at the Béla Bartók Music College before joining the Hungarian State Opera House as a solo singer. In 1972 he won an Opera House scholarship and in 1973, won a second scholarship to work as a soloist. Soon afterwards, he began to win leading roles and developed into one of the most influential personalities of late 20th century Hungarian opera. He has appeared regularly on the opera stages of Western Europe in lyric and heroic tenor roles. He has been a guest at La Scala, Milan on several occasions, as well as at the Vienna State Opera. In the course of his career, Péter Kelen has received numerous state awards: the Order of Merit (1973), the Supreme Artist Award (1988), the György Melis Prize (1995) and the Kossuth Prize (1997). He is a lifelong member of the Opera House. His principal roles are Alvaro (Verdi: Forza del Destino), Don Carlos (Verdi), Manrico (Verdi: Il Travatore), Don José (Bizet. Carmen), Des Grieux (Puccini: Manon Lescaut), Rodolphe (Puccini: La Boheme), Cavardossi (Puccini: Tosca), Edgar (Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor), Lenski (Tchaikovsky: Onegin.)
