Kovács Linda

voice

Linda Kovács graduated as a jazz singer, performing artist and teacher in 2007 at the Jazz Departement of The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest.

She has been leading own formations since 2002. With a foundation based on modern mainstream jazz, she has developed a very unique vocal based, experimental style. Her formations perform on a regular basis in jazz clubs in Budapest and at major festivals. They feature reknown contemporary artists like David Lamm, András Dés, Mátyás Szandai, Ernő Hock, Zsolt Sárvári Kovács, Krisztián Rácz, Ábel Mihalik.

"Teach me Silence" was the first album of the Kovács Linda Quartet. Released in 2009 it contains mostly original compositions by Linda and some reorchestrated pieces of contamporary composers. The album has a very clear and organic style, which is rooted in contemporary jazz and european classical music, with the focus on strong melodic content. Their sound includes a lot of freely interpreted elements and other devices which make it unique and progressive. Other members of the quartet are: Márton Fenyvesi on guitar, Ernő Hock on upright bass, Zsolt Sárvári Kovács on drums. The album features Ferenc Schreck on trombone, Zoltán Zana on tenor saxophone and József Czibere on percussions. "Teach me Silence" has received excellent reviews, and the band has been invited to many events (Hungarian Jazz Festival, Trafó House Of Contemporary Arts – opening act for Jim Hall).

Linda joined the Equinox formation lead by Tibor Márkus in 2002. They have released two albums so far. She has been invited several times by the Hungarian Radio to perform at jazz events in the famous Marblehall.

Between 2003-2008 she was the member of a rock, folk, jazz band called "Egy Kiss Erzsi Zene". They released two albums, and made several tours in the Czech Republic and Romania and even performed in Moscow. From 2006 to 2013 she was member of "Panchan", a percussions and acapella formation also based on the music of Erzsi Kiss. In 2010 the formation released an album titled "Édenkelet".

Although Linda is committed to jazz, she is also drawn to other experimental genres. In 2006 she attended a musical workshop by Mediawave. Instructors were William Parker, Hamid Drake, Rob Brown as contemporary avantgarde and free jazz artists and Leena Conquest.

In 2007 she took part in a workshop lead by István Grencsó on the „Moveast film festival” in Pécs. In this period she was member of Krisztián Rácz's band (guitar artist and singer) which played his original compositions. Duna Televízió recorded their concert during the "Chaplin likes music" series in 2007.

The Kovács Linda Quartet made its debut in 2009 and the Kovács Linda – Orbán György Duó in 2011, both at the Jazz Showcases event in the Palace of Arts.

Besides singing her attention has been drawn to orchestrating in the last few years. For first practical experiments she has founded a quintet for which she arranges her original compositions for two wind instruments and without drums. An exceptional concert of this formation was performed at the Classical and Jazz series of the Bartók radio station in 2012.

She has been performing with artists from other genres like Ági Szalóki (Palace of Arts), Miklós Both (Radnóti est - Palace of Arts) and Bori Rutkai (Trafó).

She has been performing with bassist Orbán György in a duo formation since 2010. This unusual and exciting formation plays chamber music moving along the edge of traditional jazz and free improvisation.

The Kovács Linda – Fenyvesi Márton-Dés András Experimental trio was founded spontaneously for an invitation in 2011. This trio is very unique regarding both orchestration and sound. Their music is pushing the envelope by reinterpretating traditional jazz standards and taking both the audience and the musicians on a tour. Few electronics, grooves, bio effects with jazz melody and harmony as the common language at the core.

She has had the opportunity to perform with many artists both from older and younger generations. Besides her permanent formations she has guest appearances in many jazz formations. She has performed with both professional big bands in Hungary, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra and the Modern Jazz Orchestra.

Since 2011 she has been teaching jazz singing at the Pikéthy Tibor conservatoire in Vác.
