Katalin Halmai began her musical studies as a pianist. In 1976 she was admitted to the piano section of the preparatory department of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where she continued her piano studies until 1981. That year she began to study singing at the Béla Bartók Music High School in Budapest, and was later admitted to the singing department of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in 1985. In her first year at the Academy, Ms. Halmai received second prize in a Liszt Singing Competition held on the occasion of the Liszt Centennial. She qualified for the final round in the song category at the Hertogenbosch Singing Competition in 1988, and since that time she has appeared abroad. She performed in an evening of French song in Bayreuth, as well as appearing in the orchestral concerts of the Berolina concert series in Berlin. She completed her studies at the Academy of Music in 1990.

At the same year Ms. Halmai received the second prize and the Kodály Special Prize in the International Erkel-Kodály Singing Competition. In December she was the winner of the International Hugo Wolf Singing Competition. After this success she performed on the radio of the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt-am-Main.

She is a regular guest at the Stuttgart Bach Academy, tours with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Vienna Philharmonic. She has worked with conductors such as Prof. Helmuth Rilling, Sir Roger Norrington, Leopold Hager and Herbert Blomstedt. Since 1995, she has been a soloist at the Vienna Staatsoper and Volksoper where she has sung all the major roles for her voice: Rosina, Cindarella, Cherubin, Zerlina, Annius, Siebel. Katalin Halmai is also a distinguished lieder singer and chamber musicians. Since 2002, she has taught in the vocal training and chamber music faculties of the Franz Liszt Music University.
