János Gyulai Gaál studied at the violin and piano department of the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music Budapest.
In 1941 he won the Hubay Prize at a Hungarian contest. At first his career was built on his knowledge of instruments. As violinist he worked in the State Concert Orchestra, then he was répétiteur of the Budapest Operetta Theater, where occasionally he also played the violin and the piano. Later he became music director of the Bartók Hall.
In Belgium he became prize-winner with his Piano Concerto No. 1. (1956). From 1959 he worked at the Hungarian Radio for 25 years.
Beside his successful activity as composer he was also engaged in orchestration and conducting. Representing the Hungarian Radio, he performed frequently in Leipzig, Dresden and Berlin. From 1980 he was outside worker of the Bayerischen Rundfunk in Munich, where he orchestrated, conducted and recorded a number of his works.
