Biography

Miklós Spányi was born in Budapest in Hungary. He achieved both an organ and a harpsichord diploma from the Liszt Academy in Budapest where he studied with Ferenc Gergelyin and János Sebestyén. He also studied at the Antwerp Royal Conservatory with Jos van Immerseel and at the Munich Academy of Music with Hedwig Bilgram.

Miklós Spányi has won the first prize in international harpsichord competition twice: in 1984 in Nantes and in 1987 in Paris. He has given concerts around Europe and in the USA. He has also recorded several times for various record companies. Since 1983, Spanyi has been the artistic director of Hungarian Concerto Armonico chamber orchestra. Spányi specializes in historical keyboard instruments. In addition to harpsichord and organ, he plays the clavichord, piano forte and tangent grand piano.

Since 1990 Miklós Spányi has lived in Finland, where he teaches organ and historical keyboard instruments at the Oulu Conservatory. He has given master classes in various countries, including Belgium, Holland and Hungary. Lately, Spanyi has been very interested in the work of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. In 1994 Spányi began recording his clavier concertos for BIS. In 1997, he also recorded C.P.E. Bach's solo clavier pieces. He has published the complete solo clavier production of C.P.E. Bach in modern note edition through Könemann Music. In 2001, he received a three-year scholarship from the Finnish Council for Music.
