Biography

Born in Budapest, on 9 May 1961. He studied composition in Budapest at the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Music with István Fekete Győr and Barnabás Dukay (between 1975 and 1979) and at the Liszt Academy of Music with Sándor Szokolay, József Soproni, László Dobszay and András Ligeti (between 1979 and 1984). There he also studied conducting with Ervin Lukács (between 1984 and 1989).

He was the permanent conductor of the Youth Orchestra in Miskolc between 1987 and 1994, and the Symphony Orchestra of Eger between 1989 and 1995. Since 1996 he has been the atristic director and conductor of the Budapest-Highlands Chamber Orchestra.

He conducted first performances of many contemporary Hungarian composer's works (Barnabás Dukay, József Sári, László Sáry, János Vajda, etc.) and first performances in Hungary of works like Der 13. Psalm by Brahms, The Young Apollo by Britten, Heraclitus's Watermark by Zoltán Jeney and Messages by György Kurtág. In 1992 he conducted the first Hungarian church performance of Te Deum by Berlioz. He obtained a scholarship from Sir Georg Solti in 1986 and won a Soros Music Prize in 1998.
