FRAGILE!
Only reality is more fragile than dreams. While shattered dreams die or return in old-new shapes, the fragments of reality (breaking in our hands or above our heads) stay and linger to remind, to hinder and to sadden us – or simply to vanish into anonymity. They can crack under our feet and our bodies knock against them. In any case, they demarcate our ever decreasing latitude, taking us on roads of both seclusion and freedom.

This year’s Arcus Temporum investigates human, social, religious and cultural fragility that has become increasingly apparent to all of us in recent years.
Igor Stravinsky and the world of the Finnish composer living in France, Kaija Saariaho mark two points of the musical time span. For Stravinsky, the meaning, boundaries and continuity of musical tradition and pathos are fundamental questions, while in Saariaho’s music we are moving in a real and a dreamlike terrain, which permeate and infuse each other – as if such wondering in borderline existence would make us strangers in both realms.
While Stravinsky is concerned with accepting or refusing a seemingly unified tradition and its historically articulate and inarticulate alternatives, Saariaho’s work is loaded with constant and complex dramatic tension as a result of the crossover between realty and vision.
This year, the “+1” concert presents one of the most radical musical compositions on the ruins of a life and the road to liberation in Carlo Gesualdo’s “Tenebrae”. Inspired by Gesualdo’s fragments, Stravinsky’s work returns here in the last concert. Saariaho‘s “secret gardens” point to another important venue of the Festival’s Sunday afternoon programme, the Abbey’s Botanical Garden, where you can hear in two consecutive evenings, this year, what the garden and its surroundings evoke in over twenty artists who have come to Pannonhalma from all over Europe.
